sustainable solutions for home appliances

The increasing demand for sustainable products driven by societal and legislative pressures has highlighted the need for research on energy efficiency, sustainable supply chains, carbon footprint reduction and recyclability. Innovative technologies, especially in household appliances, can leverage advanced materials like plastics and polymer-based composites for lightweight, energy-efficient, and resource-saving designs. Thermoplastics offer high recyclability through thermal disassembly and material separation, enabling significant CO2 reductions when recycled materials are used. Renewable raw materials and natural fiber-reinforced polymers provide additional sustainable alternatives for structural components.

The Comet Project focuses on conducting a comprehensive life cycle analysis of partner products to identify opportunities for reducing carbon footprints and increasing recyclability. The project examines every stage of the product life cycle, including raw material sourcing, manufacturing, distribution, use, and disposal, with the goal of finding alternatives to lower environmental impact.

Key areas for improvement, such as CO2 footprint and end-of-life scenarios, will be identified, with a focus on new materials, designs, and production methods, including polymers from renewable resources. Strategies for sustainable end-of-life management and recycling will be developed, with thermoplastic materials supporting energy-saving processes. Ultimately, the project aims to improve sustainability practices, reduce carbon footprints, and offer a competitive advantage, contributing to the EU’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
